Root Canal Therapy

  • A root canal is performed on a decayed, inflamed, or infected tooth to relieve pain and save the tooth from extraction. During a root canal procedure, the tooth’s pulp is removed, the inside of the root canal is cleaned and disinfected, and the space is filled and sealed. The procedure is safe and effective. A temporary filling will be placed following root canal therapy and you will need to return to your general dentist as soon as possible for a final restoration.

Endodontic Re-Treatment

Apicoectomy

  • If root canal therapy is not successful due to certain anatomical complexities or previous treatment limitations, the tooth may not heal properly. When a re-infection occurs, an apicoectomy is a surgical procedure performed by an endodontist that may be necessary for preserving the natural tooth. The procedure involves removing and then sealing the end of the root tips. Once healed, the tooth will be restored to full-function.

Traumatic Injuries

  • A traumatic tooth injury can happen at any time, but this type of injury is most common as a result of an accident, a fall, or sports-related injury. Tooth injuries can be mild or serious and can happen to a person of any age. The level of pain after a tooth injury can be severe, even with primary (baby) teeth. For the best hope of saving an injured permanent tooth from permanent loss, a traumatic tooth injury should be evaluated by an endodontist immediately.

Cracked Teeth / Resorption Defects

  • Cracked teeth are very common and may become symptomatic. At that point, evaluation under high magnification by an endodontist is recommended and may require root canal therapy.
  • Resorption defects are common, often asymptomatic, and usually found incidentally on routine radiographs by a general dentist. Further evaluation and often 3D imaging by an endodontist are needed before making a diagnosis and providing a custom-tailored treatment plan.
